1. Protect
One of the most important aspects of skin care is photoprotection. Sun exposure adds up over the years and causes skin cancers, wrinkles and discolorations. A broad-spectrum sunblock or sunscreen with at least an SPF 15 should be applied every day, rain or shine, regardless of the season. Sunscreens contain chemicals that absorb ultraviolet radiation while sunblocks contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide that physically reflect and scatter ultraviolet radiation. In general, sunblocks tend to be less irritating and provide far better protection against both UVA (the “aging” ray) and UVB (the “burning” ray) compared with chemical sunscreens.

2. Correct
The visible signs of aging skin, such as decreased clarity, progressive wrinkling, hyperpigmentation, roughness, and lack of tone, are largely due to chronic ultraviolet exposure and collectively referred to as “photoaging”. Retinoids, such as Retin-A, are relatives of Vitamin A and have been shown in many academic studies to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and brown spots. Over the course of years, the regular use of a topical retinoids may reverse photoaging. Retinoids help to normalize and correct sun-damaged skin cells and stimulate new collagen formation. After repeated application of a retinoid, the outermost skin layer (stratum corneum) thins. At the same time, the cells in the dermal level are stimulated to produce more collagen and thicken. The benefits of retinoids are only observed with long-term application, typically requiring six to twelve months of use before any significant improvement can be appreciated. Moreover, scientific studies have shown that ongoing use is needed to maintain efficacy.

Retinoids commonly cause flaking and dryness when first used. Over time and with consistent use your skin will adjust and the irritation subsides. A great way to begin using a retinol is with a more tolerable product such as Epionce®. 3. Restore
