All dermatologists receive advanced training in skin surgery as part of their residency. Dermatologists excise skin cancers, moles, cysts, and other skin tumors in a comfortable office setting. The most common misconception in skin surgery involves plastic surgery. Patients often think a plastic surgeon can create an “invisible scar”. Generally speaking plastic surgeons do large cosmetic procedures such as face lifts, breast augmentation, repair of major traumatic wounds etc. while dermatologists perform less extensive skin surgical procedures. It is our opinion that the scars from minor skin surgery performed by either an experienced dermatologic surgeon or plastic surgeon are identical.
